Questions
How do I check if a car is stolen?
The full history check (£7.49) looks for a stolen marker on the Police National Computer against the registration. Run it on the day you buy.
Is a clear stolen check enough?
Not on its own. A stolen car may be wearing another car's plates, so also check the VIN on the car matches the logbook and the records.
What if a car is flagged as stolen?
Don't buy it and don't confront the seller. Leave, then call the police on 101, or 999 if you feel threatened. See how to check if a car is stolen.
What happens if I've bought a stolen car?
A stolen car still belongs to its owner or their insurer, so the police can take it, and you'd usually lose the car and your money. Contact the police straight away.
How can I tell if a logbook is genuine?
Look for the DVL watermark, check the serial number isn't in the stolen ranges, and make sure the details match the seller and the car. See how to check a V5C.
