Free MOT, mileage and tax check · full history £7.49What you'll see
- Whether the car is recorded as an insurance write-off
- Its category: Cat A, B, S or N (or the older C and D)
- The loss date and type, and when it was recorded
- Alongside stolen, outstanding finance, keepers, plate changes and a valuation
The free check can't show write-offs, because they're recorded by insurers, not on the MOT. Start with the free check, then unlock the full history check.
Questions
Can I check if a car is written off for free?
Not completely. Write-offs are recorded by insurers on their own register, which isn't public, so they're in the full history check (£7.49) rather than the free check.
What do Cat S and Cat N mean?
Cat S is structural damage, Cat N non-structural. Both can go back on the road once properly repaired. Cat A and Cat B can't. See write-off categories explained.
Is it safe to buy a Cat S or Cat N car?
It can be, if the repairs were done properly and the price reflects its history. Get it inspected, ask for repair evidence, and check you can insure it.
What were Cat C and Cat D?
The older categories used until October 2017, when they were replaced by Cat S and Cat N.
Where does write-off data come from?
From the insurers' register of write-offs (MIAFTR), searched through our licensed vehicle-data supplier.
