Questions
Can I check car finance for free?
No. Finance agreements are held on industry registers that aren't public, so they're in the full history check (£7.49) rather than the free check.
Why does outstanding finance matter?
With hire purchase and PCP, the finance company owns the car until it's paid off, so the seller may not have the right to sell it.
What happens if I buy a car with outstanding finance?
The finance company may try to recover the car or the money owed. Private buyers who bought in good faith have some legal protection, but it's far better to check first. See our finance guide.
The seller says the finance will be paid off. Is that OK?
Only if it's settled before you pay. Ask for a settlement letter from the finance company, or pay the finance company directly, and get written confirmation.
Which kinds of finance show up?
Agreements secured on the car itself, such as hire purchase, PCP and conditional sale. Personal loans used to buy a car aren't secured on it, so they don't show.
