Is the tax check free?
Yes. Tax status and the date it runs out are part of the free check for any UK registration.
Does road tax transfer when I buy a car?
No. Since October 2014 tax is cancelled when a car changes hands. The seller gets a refund for any full months left, and you must tax the car before driving it.
How do I tax a car I've just bought?
Online or by phone, straight away, using the reference on the green new keeper slip from the logbook. You'll also need insurance in your name.
What does SORN mean?
Statutory Off Road Notification: the keeper has told the DVLA the car is kept off the road. A SORN car mustn't be driven or kept on a public road, except to a booked MOT test.
What if a car shows as untaxed?
It mustn't be driven or kept on a public road. Our records show when the tax ran out, but not always whether it was then declared SORN, so check on GOV.UK if you need to know.
