Is the mileage check free?
Yes. Every MOT mileage reading, the chart, the backwards-reading check and the estimate are free for any registration.
What is clocking?
Winding back a car's mileage to make it look less used and worth more. Selling a car with altered mileage without telling the buyer is illegal.
How is the estimated mileage worked out?
From the latest MOT reading plus the car's recent yearly mileage for the time since. It's only an estimate, and we don't show one if the mileage has ever gone backwards or there isn't enough history.
A reading went down slightly at a retest. Is that clocking?
Not necessarily. Testers sometimes key in a figure a few miles out at a retest. Clocking usually winds back thousands of miles, so look at the size of the drop.
Does the full report check mileage too?
Yes. It adds a mileage cross-check from our vehicle-data supplier, which can include readings from sources other than MOTs.
